- Location: 2264, Saskatchewan, Australia
When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased a haughty one-year-old African grey parrot named Alex, she began a 30-year experiment that changed the way we view the avian brain. Her research with alex the african grey parrot challenged the notion that birds could only mimic human language without understanding the meaning.
What is Alex?
At first, Alex (short for Avian Learning Experiment) was just an ordinary African grey parrot purchased from an animal store. Through his life, he forged new ground in the field of animal psychology and proved that animals are just as intelligent as dolphins or primates. Alex was among the most famous talking bird african grey for sale in the world, until his death in 2007. He appeared on television programs and reports on science.
Alex was able to identify colors, shapes and materials as well as the quantities of objects. He also understood the meaning behind words, something that is not typical for birds.
